How Search Engines Work (Crawling, Indexing, Ranking)
The Three Stages of Search Engines
Search engines like Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo process billions of web pages through three distinct phases:
[ 1. CRAWLING ] --------> [ 2. INDEXING ] --------> [ 3. RANKING ]
Discovers new pages Analyzes & stores text Calculates best matches
via automated Spiders in massive database for user search queries
1. Crawling
Search engine bots (also called spiders or crawlers, e.g. Googlebot) travel across the web by following links from one page to another.
- If your page has no links pointing to it, crawlers may never discover it!
2. Indexing
Once a crawler finds a URL, it parses the HTML page's content, images, headings, and metadata.
- The page's information is organized and stored in a giant global database known as the Search Index.
- Pages with duplicate content or
noindextags are discarded.
3. Ranking
When a user types a query (e.g., "best wireless headphones"), the search engine runs complex algorithms to evaluate hundreds of ranking signals:
- Relevance (keywords & intent)
- Page authority (backlinks)
- User experience (mobile friendliness, load speed)
- Freshness & original content quality
SEO Definition: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing website code, content, and structure so search engine crawlers can index and rank your pages at the top of organic search results.
