Off-Page SEO & Backlinks
The Currency of the Web: Authority
While On-Page SEO optimizes your own code, Off-Page SEO focuses on building your website's trust, reputation, and authority across the web.
What is a Backlink?
A backlink (or inbound link) is a hyperlink on another website that points to your web page.
Website A (TechCrunch) --------> [ Hyperlink ] --------> Website B (Your Site)
Google views backlinks as votes of confidence. If high-authority sites link to your content, search engines assume your content is valuable and rank it higher.
Domain Authority & Link Quality
Not all backlinks are equal!
- High-Quality Backlink: A link from an authoritative, trusted site in your industry (e.g.
.eduuniversity site, major tech publication, established blog). - Spam Backlink: Low-quality links from link farms, paid link networks, or irrelevant spam comments. These can trigger Google manual penalty flags!
Nofollow vs. Dofollow Links:
- rel="dofollow": Passes link equity ("SEO juice") to the target site.
- rel="nofollow": Tells search engines not to endorse the linked page (used in forum comments and paid ads).
