Analytics & Tracking Key Metrics
Measuring Success: Web Analytics
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Modern digital marketing relies on analytics platforms like Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Search Console (GSC).
Google Search Console (GSC) vs. Google Analytics (GA4)
| Tool | Focus | Key Metrics |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Search Performance (Before users click) | Organic impressions, Clicks, CTR, Average Position, Indexing errors |
| Google Analytics 4 | User Behavior (After users arrive) | Active users, Engagement rate, Conversions, Bounce rate, Traffic sources |
Essential Traffic Metrics
- Impressions: How many times your search snippet appeared in search results.
- Click-Through Rate (CTR): The percentage of impressions that resulted in a click:
The CTR Formula: CTR = (Total Clicks ÷ Total Impressions) × 100% Example: 50 clicks from 1,000 impressions = (50 ÷ 1,000) × 100 = 5% CTR.
- Conversion Rate: The percentage of visitors who complete a desired goal (e.g. creating an account, buying a product, downloading an e-book).
- Organic vs. Paid vs. Referral Traffic:
- Organic: Free traffic from search engine results.
- Paid: Traffic driven by Google Search or Meta Ads.
- Referral: Visitors arriving from links on external sites.
Continuous Optimization: Successful SEO is an ongoing process of analyzing performance in Search Console, updating underperforming content, improving title tags with low CTR, and monitoring growth.
