DPI, eDPI, and In-Game Sensitivity
Finding Your Mouse Sweet Spot!
Imagine steering a bicycle. If the handlebars are super loose and sensitive, a tiny touch makes you wobble and crash! If the handlebars are too stiff, you cannot turn around corners in time.
Mouse sensitivity works the exact same way in shooting games.
What is eDPI and How to Calculate It
Mouse speed is measured using Effective DPI (eDPI):
- Hardware DPI (Dots Per Inch): The hardware sensitivity setting of your optical mouse sensor (commonly set to 800 or 1600 DPI).
- In-Game Sensitivity: The multiplier slider inside your game mouse settings.
- eDPI Formula: eDPI equals Hardware DPI multiplied by In-Game Sensitivity.
- Example: 800 DPI with 0.35 Sensitivity in Valorant equals 280 eDPI.
Why High Sensitivity Ruins Aim Consistency
If your eDPI is too high (for example 1500+ eDPI), moving your mouse 1 millimeter shifts your crosshair 30 pixels on screen! Under pressure, human finger muscles cannot make sub-millimeter corrections, leading to shaky tracking and missed shots.
Target eDPI Benchmarks for Popular Games:
- Tactical Shooters (Valorant, CS2): Target 200 to 350 eDPI. Lower sensitivity allows using your whole arm for big turns and wrist/fingertips for pixel-perfect headshots.
- Fast Tracking Shooters (Apex Legends, Overwatch, Call of Duty): Target 3000 to 5000 eDPI (or 25cm to 35cm per 360 turn) for fast tracking across wide angles.
