Imagine Your Computer is a Super Fast Race Car!

Think of your computer like a bright red race car driving on a racetrack. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the driver, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is the big fast engine, and the Random Access Memory (RAM) is the storage trunk in the back of the car.

When you buy a computer or install Windows, Microsoft packs the trunk full of heavy rocks and unused toys! These heavy items are called bloatware and telemetry. They force the driver to work extra hard and slow down your race car during games.

What is Windows Telemetry and Why It Causes Lag

Telemetry is a background system where Windows constantly takes notes on everything happening on your PC and sends secret encrypted reports back to server headquarters.

  1. Background Service Overload: Services like Connected User Experiences and Telemetry (DiagTrack) run continuous background scans.
  2. CPU Thread Interrupts: While you are in an intense gaming fight, telemetry wakes up CPU core threads to gather log files.
  3. Frame Time Spikes: These sudden background tasks cause micro-stutters and 1 percent low FPS drops, making your game screen stutter for a fraction of a second.

Unpacking the Heavy Trunk Step by Step:

  1. Turn Off Diagnostic Telemetry in Settings: Open Windows Settings, click Privacy & Security, click Diagnostics & feedback. Change Diagnostic data to Required only. This stops Windows from sending optional diagnostic reports while you play.
  2. Disable Telemetry System Services: Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc and press Enter. Scroll down to Connected User Experiences and Telemetry, right-click it, click Properties, change Startup Type to Disabled, and click Stop.
  3. Throw Away Unused Bloatware Apps: Open Settings -> Apps -> Installed Apps. Click the three dots next to apps you never use like Weather, News, Solitaire, or Feedback Hub and click Uninstall.
  4. Turn Off Xbox Game Bar and Background Recording: If you do not use Xbox Game Bar to capture clips, open Settings -> Gaming -> Xbox Game Bar and toggle it OFF. Click Captures on the left menu and toggle Record in the background while playing a game to OFF. This removes a heavy recording buffer off your GPU engine!
  5. Disable Background Apps Permission: In Settings -> Apps -> Installed Apps, click Advanced Options on apps and set Background app permissions to Never so sneaky apps stay asleep while you are gaming.
