FPS Capping and System Low Latency

Instant Response When You Click Your Mouse!

When your graphics card works at 99 to 100 percent maximum capacity, it creates a backlog line of rendered frames sitting in buffer memory waiting to be displayed. This backlog line causes severe input latency, making your mouse feel floaty and unresponsive!

Using technologies like NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency and proper frame rate capping clears the backlog line so your mouse clicks register on screen instantly!

Understanding End-to-End System Latency

System latency consists of three distinct stages:

  1. Peripheral Latency: Time for your mouse switch to send an electrical click signal to the PC (1ms to 3ms).
  2. Game & Render Queue Latency: Time for the CPU to process game simulation logic and wait for the GPU render queue buffer. When GPU is 100 percent maxed out, this stage can add 30ms of lag!
  3. Display Latency: Time for the monitor panel to scan out pixels (2ms to 5ms).

Configuring Low Latency Settings Step by Step:

  1. Enable NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency: In your game video settings, locate NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency (or AMD Anti-Lag) and set it to On + Boost. Reflex clears the GPU render queue backlog dynamically, reducing input lag by up to 50 percent!
  2. Cap Your Frame Rate Correctly:
  • If using G-Sync or FreeSync on a high refresh rate monitor, set an in-game FPS cap 3 to 5 frames below your monitor refresh rate (for example, cap at 138 FPS on a 144Hz screen, or 235 FPS on a 240Hz screen).
  • This keeps variable refresh rate active while preventing V-Sync buffer latency.
  1. Turn OFF V-Sync in Game: Always keep vertical sync OFF inside game menus to prevent double-buffering latency penalties.
