XMP, EXPO, and RAM Memory Speeds

The Super Fast Conveyor Belt for Your CPU!

Imagine your CPU is a master chef preparing delicious meals, and system RAM is a conveyor belt carrying raw ingredients to the kitchen.

If your RAM conveyor belt runs at slow default speeds (such as 2133 MHz or 4800 MHz), the master chef spends half their time standing around waiting for ingredients to arrive!

Understanding XMP, EXPO, and RAM Timings

  1. Default JEDEC Speeds: Motherboards boot new RAM sticks at slow emergency backup speeds to guarantee initial booting.
  2. Intel XMP and AMD EXPO: Pre-tested high-speed memory profiles stored on the RAM stick chips (for example DDR4 3600 MHz or DDR5 6000 MHz).
  3. Dual Channel vs Single Channel: Running two RAM sticks in matching slots doubles memory bus bandwidth from 64-bit to 128-bit wide lanes.
  4. Impact on 1 Percent Low FPS: Fast RAM speeds with tight latency timings reduce CPU wait stalls, boosting 1 percent minimum FPS by up to 25 percent in CPU-heavy games!

Enabling XMP / EXPO Step by Step:

  1. Restart PC into Motherboard BIOS: Turn on your PC and repeatedly press the Delete or F2 key on your keyboard until the BIOS screen appears.
  2. Locate Memory Profiles: Find Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) on Intel motherboards or EXPO / DOCP on AMD motherboards.
  3. Select Profile 1: Change setting from Disabled to Profile 1.
  4. Verify Dual Channel Slots: Ensure your two RAM sticks are placed in DIMM slots 2 and 4 (A2 and B2) counted from the CPU socket.
  5. Save and Exit: Press F10 to save settings and reboot into Windows!
