Rests & Sub-Sequences

Two more mini-notation powers: rests and sub-sequences.

Rests with - or ~

Put a dash - (or a tilde ~) where you want a moment of silence:

Rests leave gaps that give a rhythm breathing room.

Sub-sequences with [ brackets ]

Put a few sounds inside square brackets to make a sub-sequence. The bracket's content is squished into its own slot:

Try adding more sounds inside a bracket!

Why sub-sequences matter

Just like the whole sequence, the content of a sub-sequence is squished to its own length. This lets you write detailed patterns without them playing at the same speed as the top level.

Sub-sub-sequences with [[ brackets ]]

You can nest as deep as you want:

TL;DR

• - or ~ is a rest (silence).
• [a b c] makes a sub-sequence, squished into one slot.
• [[a b] c] nests sub-sequences, as deep as you like.
