Lesson 12 +10 XP

Changing the Instrument

Just like unpitched sounds, you choose the instrument with sound.

Pick an instrument

strudel
note("36 43, 52 59 62 64").sound("piano")

Try different sounds:

  • gm_electric_guitar_muted
  • gm_acoustic_bass
  • gm_voice_oohs
  • gm_blown_bottle
  • sawtooth
  • square
  • triangle
  • what about bd, sd or hh?

strudel
note("36 43, 52 59 62 64").sound("sawtooth")

Remove the sound entirely?

If you remove .sound('...'), Strudel uses a default synth. Try it!

strudel
note("36 43, 52 59 62 64")

Switch between sounds

Put several sounds in the sound string and they'll change through the pattern:

strudel
note("48 67 63 [62, 58]")
.sound("piano gm_electric_guitar_muted")

Stack multiple sounds

Use a comma to play them together:

strudel
note("48 67 63 [62, 58]")
.sound("piano, gm_electric_guitar_muted")

The note and sound patterns combine. We'll see more ways to combine patterns later.

TL;DR

  • sound("piano") picks the instrument.
  • Try sawtooth, square, triangle, gm_acoustic_bass, and more.
  • Space in sound = switch instruments over time.
  • Comma in sound = play them stacked together.
