The Home Row Foundation (ASDF & JKL;)

What is Touch Typing?

Touch typing is the ability to type without looking at the keyboard buttons. Instead of visually hunting for keys with two fingers ("hunt and peck"), touch typing relies on muscle memory across all 10 fingers.

The Home Row Anchor Keys: F and J

Look closely at your physical keyboard. On the F and J keys, you will feel two small raised bumps or ridges.

  • Place your Left Index Finger on the F key (bump).
  • Place your Right Index Finger on the J key (bump).

These tactile bumps allow your hands to find their starting position in total darkness without looking down!

Resting Finger Placement (Home Row)

Rest your remaining fingers naturally across the middle row:

Left Hand: [A] - Pinky | [S] - Ring | [D] - Middle | [F] - Index (Bump)
Right Hand: [J] - Index (Bump) | [K] - Middle | [L] - Ring | [;] - Pinky
Thumbs: Both thumbs rest gently over the [Spacebar]
ℹ️ Note

The Golden Rule: Every finger is responsible for a specific column of keys. After reaching out to strike a key on the top or bottom row, your finger must immediately return to its Home Row resting position.

Striking Mechanics & Posture

  1. Keep your wrists slightly floating above the desk—do not rest heavy wrists on the desk while typing.
  2. Keep your fingers curved like you are holding a small tennis ball.
  3. Strike keys with a crisp, springy tap using the pads of your fingertips.
