Top Row Navigation (QWERTYUIOP)

Reaching Upward: The Top Row

Now that your fingers are anchored on the home row (ASDF JKL;), extending to the top row (QWERTYUIOP) requires a subtle upward diagonal reach.

Top Row Finger Column Mapping

Each finger moves straight upward and slightly to the left from its home key:

Left Hand Reaches:
- Left Pinky: Reach from [A] up to [Q]
- Left Ring: Reach from [S] up to [W]
- Left Middle: Reach from [D] up to [E]
- Left Index: Reach from [F] up to [R] and reach sideways to [T]

Right Hand Reaches:
- Right Index: Reach from [J] up to [U] and reach sideways to [Y]
- Right Middle: Reach from [K] up to [I]
- Right Ring: Reach from [L] up to [O]
- Right Pinky: Reach from [;] up to [P]
💡 Tip

Index Finger Workload: Both index fingers handle two columns of keys. Left Index handles R and T. Right Index handles U and Y.

Practice Word Drills

Combine top row reaches with home row anchors to practice fluid motion:

  • read $\rightarrow$ Left Index (R), Left Middle (E), Left Pinky (A), Left Middle (D)
  • port $\rightarrow$ Right Pinky (P), Right Ring (O), Left Index (R), Left Index (T)
  • quite $\rightarrow$ Left Pinky (Q), Right Index (U), Right Middle (I), Left Index (T), Left Middle (E)

Focus on rhythm over speed. Striking keys at a steady metronome-like beat prevents finger stumbles!
