Controlling Command Keys Without Breaking Flow
Most typists lose posture and time when operating control keys like Spacebar, Enter, Backspace, and Tab.
1. The Spacebar: Thumb Alternation
Both thumbs rest above the spacebar.
- Best Practice: Use your Right Thumb if the word ended with a left-hand key. Use your Left Thumb if the word ended with a right-hand key.
- Most typists pick one dominant thumb (usually right). The key is to tap the Spacebar gently without lifting your hands off the home row.
2. The Enter Key: Right Pinky Reach
- Right Pinky extends outward from
;to tap Enter. - Do NOT move your entire right hand wrist away from the home row bump on J!
3. The Backspace Key: Right Pinky Extension
- The Right Pinky reaches up and right to hit Backspace.
- Anchor your index finger on J so your hand instantly springs back into position after correcting an error.
Tip
Word-by-Word Deletion Shortcut:
- Windows: Press Ctrl + Backspace to delete an entire word at once.
- Mac: Press Option + Delete to delete an entire word at once.
This is 5x faster than tapping Backspace 10 times!
