Spacebar, Enter, Backspace & Shift Mechanics

Controlling Command Keys Without Breaking Flow

Most typists lose posture and time when operating control keys like Spacebar, Enter, Backspace, and Tab.

1. The Spacebar: Thumb Alternation

Both thumbs rest above the spacebar.

  • Best Practice: Use your Right Thumb if the word ended with a left-hand key. Use your Left Thumb if the word ended with a right-hand key.
  • Most typists pick one dominant thumb (usually right). The key is to tap the Spacebar gently without lifting your hands off the home row.

2. The Enter Key: Right Pinky Reach

  • Right Pinky extends outward from ; to tap Enter.
  • Do NOT move your entire right hand wrist away from the home row bump on J!

3. The Backspace Key: Right Pinky Extension

  • The Right Pinky reaches up and right to hit Backspace.
  • Anchor your index finger on J so your hand instantly springs back into position after correcting an error.
💡 Tip

Word-by-Word Deletion Shortcut: - Windows: Press Ctrl + Backspace to delete an entire word at once. - Mac: Press Option + Delete to delete an entire word at once. This is 5x faster than tapping Backspace 10 times!
