Eliminating Key-Looking & Building Rhythm
Breaking the Looking Habit
The biggest bottleneck in typing speed is the visual feedback loop: looking down at the keyboard, locating the key, looking back up at the screen to verify, and correcting typos.
How to Blindfold Your Muscle Memory
- Cover Your Hands: Place a light towel or piece of paper over your hands while practicing.
- Trust Mistakes: If you hit the wrong key, do not immediately glance down. Use tactile feel to re-anchor your index fingers on the F and J bumps, then retry.
- Screen Focus: Force your eyes to stay fixed on the text prompt on screen.
Tip
Typing Rhythm (Cadence): Typing at a constant 60 WPM with steady 100ms intervals between every keystroke is much faster than sprinting 100 WPM on easy words and pausing 2 seconds on hard words.
Common Speed Killers & Solutions
| Bad Habit | Why It Slows You Down | How to Fix It |
|---|---|---|
| Peeking at keys | Destroys visual focus and context switching | Cover hands with a cloth during practice |
| Floating away from Home Row | Lost spatial reference point | Re-anchor F and J tactile bumps between sentences |
| Pounding keys heavily | Causes finger fatigue & wrist strain | Use light, springy fingertip taps |
| Single-hand Shift key | Causes awkward wrist twisting | Always press Shift with the opposite hand |
