Error Recovery & Backspace Discipline
Mastering Error Recovery
Typing fast is useless if a single mistake causes you to freeze up or hit the Backspace key 15 times in panic.
The 3-Character Rule
If you notice a typo in a word you are currently typing:
- If you are 1-2 characters in: Hit Backspace immediately, fix the character, and continue.
- If you are 4+ characters deep into a long word: Do NOT tap Backspace repeatedly! Press
Ctrl + Backspace(Mac:Option + Delete) to erase the entire misspelled word and retype it cleanly.
Warning
The Backspace Spam Trap: Tapping Backspace 8 times (Backspace-Backspace-Backspace...) takes ~800ms. Erasing the full word in 1 chord keystroke (Ctrl + Backspace) takes ~80ms!
Psychological Discipline
- Do Not Panic: Mistakes happen even to 150 WPM typists.
- Maintain Flow: Reset your index fingers on F and J bumps smoothly after correcting a mistake.
