Ergonomics, RSI Prevention & Posture
Protecting Your Hands: Typing Ergonomics
Long hours of high-speed typing can cause Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome if your desk setup and posture are poor.
1. Wrist Alignment (The Floating Wrist)
INCORRECT (Bent Wrist Strain):
[Hand] ---__ [Desk Surface] <-- Causes Carpal Tunnel Compression!
CORRECT (Neutral Floating Line):
[Arm] ========= [Hand] ---- [Keyboard] <-- Straight neutral alignment
- Keep your wrists straight and floating in a neutral position parallel to the floor.
- Do not rest your wrists flat against the desk while actively typing. Use wrist rests ONLY during rest breaks!
2. Desk & Chair Setup
- Elbow Angle: 90° to 100° open angle.
- Monitor Height: Top line of the screen should align with eye level so your neck is straight.
- Feet: Planted flat on the floor.
Note
The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and gently stretch your fingers and wrists to maintain blood circulation.
