Decals, Lens Flares & Halos
Decals, Lens Flares & Halos
Unity rendering support includes built-in specialized effects for detailing environments, light points, and atmosphere.
Decals (URP & HDRP)
A Decal projects a material onto other meshes (like posters on walls, bullet holes on surfaces, or blood splatters on floors):
- Decal Projector component: Projects a decal material within a bounding box.
- The projection automatically deforms to match the shape of the surface meshes it intersects.
- To use decals in URP, you must add the Decal renderer feature to your URP Forward Renderer asset settings.
Lens Flares
Lens Flares simulate the optical scattering of light inside a physical camera lens (causing halos and rings when looking at bright lights):
- SRP Lens Flare component: Attach this to a Light or GameObject.
- Set a Lens Flare Data asset defining the rings, flares, and chromatic aberration shapes.
- The flare automatically fades when blocked by other colliders.
Light Halos
A Halo creates a soft glowing ring around light sources to simulate misty air or dusty light scattering:
- Enable the Draw Halo checkbox on a Light component, or add a standalone Halo component to a GameObject.
TL;DR
- Decal Projector overlays materials onto existing mesh surfaces dynamically.
- Decals require the Decal Renderer Feature enabled in the URP asset.
- SRP Lens Flares simulate camera lens light reflection and scatter.
- Halos simulate atmospheric dust or moisture scattering light.
